About Me

Dr. Augusto Macalalag, Jr. is an Assistant Professor of STEM Education and teaches undergraduate and graduate science methods courses at Arcadia University. In 2014, Dr. Macalalag conceptualized and developed the STEM Education Graduate Certificate Program for K-12 preservice and inservice teachers. The certificate program’s goal is to foster teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge in planning, implementing and assessing instructions that incorporates the disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and cross cutting concepts based on the Next Generation Science Standards. The STEM certificate program has five courses (15 credits) that include an environmental education preview to Sicily, Italy. The program was featured at the conference of the National Science Teachers Association’s Television https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTD9XrvtcqE&t=31s that was held in Atlanta, GA from March 15 to 18, 2018.

Dr. Macalalag is a member of the Philadelphia Regional Noyce Partnership group that includes six universities: Temple, La Salle, Drexel, St. Joseph’s, Arcadia, and Bryn Mawr. The group recently received a large grant from the National Science to provide education and scholarship as well as to support the next generation of STEM teachers. Throughout the years, he received recognition and awards including the the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society’s Recognition for International Scholars in 2018, American Society for Engineering Education’s Best Practices in K-12 Engineering and Pre-college Outreach Program in 2010, Best Zone Paper in 2011, and Best Practices in K-12 Engineering and University Partnerships in 2012. Finally, Dr. Macalalag holds teaching certificates in elementary, middle and high school and school administrator certificates. Dr. Macalalag received his Ed.D. in Science from Rutgers University, and an M.A. in Education and a B.S. in Chemistry from St. Peter’s University.
